Interior Stylist for a day with Melinda Ashton-Turner : London Sept 3rd
Location: Holborn Studios, London
Thinking about a career in Interior styling but don’t know where to start? Or….. already made that first scary step and are assisting in the industry but are afraid to ask the real questions?
For the past 25 years plus Melinda Ashton Turner has been lucky enough to work on-staff as Style Director for Vogue Living Australia as Decoration Editor for Homes & Gardens UK, and freelance for Living Etc, Elle Decoration UK and been a weekly contributor of The Guardian and the Sunday Times. As an interior stylist she’s also had the opportunity to work on catalogues, advertising campaigns, as a consultant for brands and on events all over the UK and abroad. And now you can learn from her too!
As Melinda says – No day is ever the same and I often say it’s a lifestyle not a career choice. I often get asked what my role actually entails, when you explain the layers that go into the work people are often surprised, my mother still doesn’t understand exactly what I do and my 15yr old thinks I just shop all day!
It’s these questions alongside misconceptions that have inspired me to create a unique course that openly and honestly paints a picture of the background required, talks you through a commission from start to finish and explores the pro’s and con’s amongst other topics. I will show you the two sides of our role on a shoot, there is often more time spent on pre-production than in front of the camera in most cases. This will be a safe space where both beginners and assistants are able to ask questions without judgement. I will also provide the rare opportunity to get some hands-on experience working in front of the camera to create a still life with an industry photographer in a functioning photographic studio. I will guide you through the process as well as give you some insider tips and tricks that will move your practice forward.
It’s not a course promising you a career in styling. What it will give you is a holistic and realistic look into the industry, the path which will take you in the right direction and some extra skills to help you along the way. It’s a day rammed with information where I will aim to answer all of the questions you may or may not know to ask which will leave you either wanting to quit your job (one person did the next day!) or at the very least arm you with information to join up the dots and make a more knowledgeable decision.
There is no point going to the grave with my knowledge and experience, so if I’m able to help anyone decide whether they’ll like to work in this wonderfully exciting industry I’ll be glad to help.
